Hobby Lobby: an artist’s perspective and the Divine spark

By its very nature, art is defined by constructive, creative action. Right now an American business which supports the arts is being threatened with constrictive legal action by means of President Obama’s Health and Human Services  Department. Hobby Lobby Arts and Crafts means business. The Brenner Brief report on CEO David Green’s open letter on January 3, 2013. Green has consistently stated that his company’s purpose is one founded upon Biblical principles. True to his convictions, all of his stores are closed on Sundays. Also noted, Hobby Lobby’s treatment of employees is one that many would desire. As Green stated in his open letter, “Our full time employees start at 80 percent above minimum wage.”

Successful by any account, Hobby Lobby boasts 525 stores. Green is willing to forfeit financial profit in order to follow his conscience. Risking a fee of $1.3 million per day for disobeying Obama’s HHS order, the financial stakes are high for the visionary entrepreneur.

As a pro-life visual artist, I wear the belief of “The Seamless Smock” (as contrasted with Cardinal Bernardin’s popular “Seamless Garment” argument. which some felt downplayed the evil which is abortion). My anti-abortion convictions are not divorced from the purview of the outside world. For a moral shift to occur in society, it is imperative to stand by core principles and proclaim them. It is to be a catalyst for change.

As an artist’s imagination receives the spark to create, God is the Divine Creator and has imbued a Divine spark in each of His human creations from the very start. This is a belief which is held by many, and it is also a belief which President Obama would have many violate. David Green’s example today sounds a bell, because he could be any one of us.

Though President Obama and HHS’ Kathleen Sebelius demand Hobby Lobby to bow and capitulate, Hobby Lobby is maintaining defiant resolve. The arts and crafts CEO and his embattled company are reminiscent of the three men in the Book of Daniel (Chapters 1-3), whom at the dictate of King Nebuchadnezzar were ordered to be thrown into the fiery furnace.

Perhaps we need to paint with bold colors, as President Ronald Reagan proclaimed on August 23, 1984, and effuse our country with a vibrant, positive message none could ignore.
