Virginia stands for life update; board of health comment period starts Jan. 22
On January 9, 2013, Virginia Stands for Life Prayer Walk and Prayer Rally was held in Richmond, VA at the Capitol Bell Tower. In attendance were nearly 1,000 Virginians who value life from conception to maturity, regardless of ability.
The event, sponsored by more than two dozen pro-life organizations, was held to celebrate life and let Virginia lawmakers know residents support them after they passed several pro-life laws during last year’s legislative session. Speakers included Olivia Gans Turner, the President of Virginia Society For Human Life, the Virginia affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, Inc. (NRLC); Burke Balch, J.D., the Director of Powell Center for Medical Ethics at NRLC; Ryan Bomberger, who founded The Radiance Foundation with his wife Bethany; and Victoria Cobb, President of The Family Foundation.
The event commenced with a prayer walk at 9th and Grace Streets and followed two routes. Groups of 10 – 12 individuals were assigned to a pastor or prayer leader and a guide as they walked to the Capitol Bell Tower. The four stops along the way offered participants an opportunity to reflect on and pray for the sanctity of human life, families in the Commonwealth, the government and all in authority and the event itself, Virginia Stands for Life. A list of Virginia lawmakers was also provided so participants could pray for each individually.
In early 2012, media attention was focused on Virginia when State Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel introduced SB 484, which requires an ultrasound of the unborn child at least 24 hours before an abortion. The bill also requires doctors to provide the patient with information concerning abortion alternatives and the opportunity to view the sonogram pictures.
Democrats immediately mis-labeled the legislation “The Virginia Rape Bill,” insisting it required trans-vaginal ultrasound; however, the original language of the bill merely stated, “Except in the case of a medical emergency, at least 2 hours before the performance of an abortion a qualified medical professional trained in sonography and working under the direct supervision of a physician licensed in the Commonwealth shall perform fetal ultrasound imaging and auscultation of fetal heart tone services on the patient undergoing the abortion for the purpose of determining gestational age.”
Eventually, the language was amended to, “ At least 24 hours before the performance of an abortion, a qualified medical professional trained in sonography and working under the supervision of a physician licensed in the Commonwealth shall perform fetal trans-abdominal ultrasound imaging on the patient undergoing the abortion for the purpose of determining gestational age.” This change was sufficient to garner enough votes to pass the legislation despite the best efforts of pro-death zealots and the MSM. As Olivia Gans Turner noted, it was a “hard-won fight.”
PRO-LIFE VIRGINIANS TAKE ACTION
Pro-life Virginians may have won this battle, but they cannot back down now, for they have not won the war. You can support your senators and delegates by encouraging them to pass legislation to regulate abortion centers. A public comment period of 60 days is about to begin on January 22, 2013 where you can voice your support for abortion center health and safety standards adopted by the Virginia Board of Health and approved by Governor Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. Pro-abortion forces will be flooding the public comment with their attacks. You can make your voice heard on this critical issue during the public comment period.

PRO-LIFE AMERICANS TAKE ACTION
Whether you live in Virginia or not, you too can encourage your state representatives to pass legislation in favor of life by doing the following:
- Find out who your legislators are
- Get on their mailing list and actively engage them.
- Commit to visit with your legislators at least once a year in the state capitol and once a year in their district.
- Pray for Godly people to be inspired to run for office. You may be one of them.
- Get on at least one host organization’s mailing list/social media network
- Start a civic information table at your church or social group
- Encourage your pro-life friends and family to do all of the above. If you are a leader, you must lead.
The abortion industry will be holding rallies across the country on January 22 where they will celebrate the Roe v. Wade decision. Attend the rally in your state and let America know, the death of 54,000,000 babies since 1973 is nothing to celebrate.
