A plea to feminists to stop repealing the 19th amendment

The 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution affirms a woman’s right to vote. We need to repeal it.

A ridiculous statement made in jest to remind everyone of their responsibilities. Did it make you angry? I was uncomfortable writing it. Cultural norms of today make me broach any topic deemed a woman’s issue with some trepidation.

However, society has also allowed much latitude to a mother protecting her cubs. I lay claim to such latitude allowed women as a father protecting his daughter. As a father trying to protect and teach his teenage girl — beautiful from the inside out, smart, and caring daughter – I have witnessed old and new threats to the well-being of every daughter in the country. The old ones are almost laughable now compared to the new threats.

Historically, a father’s attention and worry was of almost singular focus — the suitor vying for his daughter’s attention. I have looked forward to having fun with the now clichéd scenario of having my daughter’s date showing up at the door while I was cleaning my gun. Alas, today’s father faces far more dangerous and formidable foes vying for his daughter: the results of feminism, the prevailing culture of women’s so-called empowerment, and effectively being shut out of the conversation.

Do you remember the Virginia Slims cigarette slogan “You’ve come a long way baby”?  It came to mind  when reading a New York Times article titled “The End of Courtship?” It describes today’s dating scene as one comprised of mere text messages, hook-ups, and main hangs that show up at events instead of a date. Instead of requiring minimal respect from a male to go on a date, there has been an ongoing devolution from traditional dating, to friends with benefits, then the booty call, to hanging out if she  happens to show up somewhere. According to those interviewed, there is little effort required of the male. Women must now seize upon opportunities for attention like a glance at a softball game. And the ability to decipher text messages as to intent and interest is a must for any woman looking for any type of relationship.

A young male chauvinist pig from 1950 couldn’t have imagined a more perfect result than what feminism has wrought — less hassle and better results, for the male. What a con job feminism has turned out to be for young women.

And what do we make of a culture that hardly blinks at young women agreeing to be a sugar baby? Haven’t you heard it? This is worse than the Julia campaign.

Fox News 2 in Detroit reports that over 800 co-eds at four Michigan universities are signed up with a service that hooks them up with “sugar daddies.” All the student has to do is provide “companionship” to the sugar daddy. In return, the “sugar baby” receives approximately $3,000 per month for tuition and expenses. “I think it’s a great idea,” said one MSU student while cameras were rolling. Others didn’t agree. “It seems kinda like prostitution almost,” said another student. Well, duh — because it is prostitution, not empowerment.

What can be done to reverse the dehumanizing devaluation of women as reflected by these examples, not to mention the sex selection abortion of girls?  As a father, I ask the women of America, the most influential voting bloc in politics — what the heck are you doing?  What woman’s issue is more important than the deepening objectification of our girls? And why are men, especially those in the Church, automatically disqualified to participate in women’s issues?

Every man has a mother whom he loves dearly. Some have sisters whom they love more than they say. We have wives we cherish and thank God for every day. And, lucky men like me have daughters who opened up our male minds to teach us, just by being themselves, the true strength of, the beauty in, and dignity of the feminine.

With that in mind, please know that most men, especially those with daughters, are your allies and we look for your leadership. Women have the power to determine where we go as a country. Moreover, women are obligated to challenge the current societal and cultural norms of how our daughters are viewed and treated. The 19th Amendment affirmed it. And this father is asking — are you woman enough to do something about it?

Our world has become less personal (and more about individual satisfaction). Text messaging has replaced face to face discussion, Facebook posts as opinion and smartphone cameras as journalistic excellence. More than once have I had actual discussions with my daughter about these issues. Most times I remind her it’s not about jumping off the bridge like everyone else, it’s about not being afraid to step back and let the other fools do it if they chose to.

  2. Agree.Perhaps more male chauvinism today, then before feminist movement.

  3. Mike maybe it’s because I have a daughter too but HANDS DOWN this was your best column yet. This was the best column on women in our society that I have read it recent memory. Excellent job because that is the inconvenient truth of the feminist movement. Now parents like us have an incredibly harder job to do and we better make sure we do it well with what the society has waiting out there for our girls. Great piece and I will be sharing it like crazy.

Many thanks Richard. Fathers can not defer anymore- we are allies to women and must be involved in the conversation. At the same time, we need to challenge and encourage women to lead the charge to take on feminism. They can’t be cheerleaders to each other anymore. They need to be generals and captains in charging up the hill, if you will.
Since motherhoold is not held in high esteem anymore, “the hand that rocks the cradle of civilization” has been collectively placed elsewhere and we are all suffering for it. Women wanted the vote. They got it. Now they need to be the stewards of the future.

      Thanks again.
