American Pastor Saeed Abedini sentenced in Iran

Sources are reporting the sentencing and conviction of American Pastor Saeed Abedini in Iran. Iranian born Pastor Saeen Abedini was detained there on a visit during the summer of 2012. Consequently, the Pastor is being held in captivity at the ill famed Evin prison. The alleged crime is “threatening the national security of Iran through his leadership in Christian house churches.”

Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), whose law firm represents Abedini’s wife and children, adamantly continues to present this case to world attention. Sekulow urged for “citizens of the world to rise up in protest. We call on governments around the world to stand and defend Pastor Saeed.”

Pastor Abedini’s case had been brought before Judge Pir-Abassi, widely known for a poor human rights record, according to Jordan Sekulow’s organization, the ACLJ. Ominously, Pir-Abassi also possesses the tag, “the hanging judge.” According to the ACLJ, Abedini was charged with “attempting to sway Iranian youth away from Islam.”

Essentiall,y Pastor Abedini was charged with eight years of imprisonment for “evangelizing.”

Sekulow said, “We know that with the Iranian Revolutionary Court, Pastor Saeed’s conviction and sentence had to be approved at the very top — The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomenei had to sign off.”

Reportedly, the Pastor has been beaten during his captivity. Saeed’s wife, Naghmeh, claims that she has suffered “psychological torture” by the Iranian government’s seeming offer to release her spouse only to have been proven false, according to ACLJ. Indeed, Abedini’s nightmare is an Islamic cautionary tale. The brutal detention of an American should be redressed. Ever increasing displays of Islamic intolerance and violence have spread throughout the world like a tourniquet unable to stem a tide of blood. The clear, brave voice of previous White House leadership seems to be replaced by a distracted, muffled one.

Could an American Christian Pastor be a symbol of hope as to how a nation responds?

Though Senator Kerry has much on his plate, so do those unjustly deprived of their rights. Our efforts as citizens can help effectuate change if we persistently press for it. In the past, Sen. Kerry has indicated that he would be willing to negotiate with Iran. Perhaps Iran has made note of this, not to mention our country’s prevailing policies.

Interestingly, Iran has sentenced Pastor Saeed Abedini just at the very outset of President Obama’s second term.
