100-Foot Mural showing Zimmerman shooting Martin in the back of his head.

Truth is so overrated today, isn’t it? Why bother with truth when you can apply emotional virtue to a specific scenario so that it says something that you can believe in? Such appears to be the case with a recent mural unveiled at the Florida Capital Building.

The 100 foot mural’s message is “We Are All Trayvon Martin” and was created by Miami artist Huong. I beg to differ. I am not Trayvon and neither am I George Zimmerman.

The mural shows a man who looks similar to George Zimmerman, standing in the shooter’s stance, firing a bullet directly into the back of the head of Trayvon Martin. Now, I realize this is art, so as with any art, there is room for interpretation. Many people do believe that Zimmerman hunted Martin down like an animal and shot him for no other reason than the fact that Martin was black.

In fact, according to one site, Martin’s own parents pretty much think that sums it up. Working with Change.org, the Martin’s wrote a letter, which states in part the following. “Last year, our son Trayvon Martin was stalked, chased down and killed by George Zimmerman, and Zimmerman received no punishment whatsoever…”

Again, while I realize that this is the way some people believe the situation transpired. However, according to eye-witnesses and testimony of star witnesses like Rachel Jeantel, another picture evolves. Whether or not you believe Zimmerman feared for his life to the point where he felt he had no recourse but to shoot Trayvon Martin is for you to decide. The courts have spoken and found there was a reasonable doubt so Zimmerman was acquitted. However, the mural in question, as well as the Martins’ depiction of the event bears no resemblance to the truth.

This is what people want to believe happened. They want to believe that there are white people out there (and Zimmerman sees himself as Hispanic) who want nothing more than to kill blacks as a sport. Never mind that there is no evidence of this, but there is evidence of members of the New Black Panther Party calling for the murder of “crackas.”

Never mind that the racial rhetoric is becoming extremely heated by the likes of Sharpton and others. The artist who created the mural certainly has a right to create what they want to create. It would be helpful if there was at least some truth involved in the depiction of the situation.

The left wants to continue to portray their version, which is that Zimmerman deliberately hunted Martin down and killed him because Martin was black. That’s not what happened as far as the courts have decided. That would be like saying Roderick Scott deliberately targeted three white boys and wound up shooting and killing one of them. He was arrested, tried, and also acquitted. I understand that the young white boy that Scott killed was rifling through a vehicle that he did not own. I understand that Martin was merely walking through the neighborhood. Yes, Zimmerman could have stayed in his car or his home. Martin could have kept walking to Brandy Green’s house.

Instead, these two got into a tussle and Zimmerman felt he had no choice but to shoot to defend himself. He’ll live with that decision for the rest of his life and I would not want to trade places with him.

But to suggest that Zimmerman is a “white racist” who went out of his way to hunt down Martin for the express purpose of killing him is way out of line. There is not one piece of evidence to support that at all.

The left does not need evidence though. They have their “emotional virtue” and because of that, they “feel” as though that is what really happened. Because they feel that this is the truth, they go with it. It makes them feel better and they can stand self-righteously on their soap box and condemn whites as a race for the alleged institutional racism towards blacks.

This is why it was so important to portray Zimmerman as “white.” Whites are the oppressors and everyone else is the victim, including Hispanics. How would it have looked to show an Hispanic shooting and killing a black person? It had to be a white person and even though Zimmerman is half-white and half-Hispanic (as Obama is half-white and half-black), Sharpton got to the point of simply referring to Zimmerman as a “white man.”

People do not realize just how much political correctness plays into this whole thing. It’s a tragedy from start to finish. It’s tragic that Martin was killed. It’s tragic how Zimmerman was (and still is) portrayed by the media and now this artist from Miami, and it’s tragic that this entire situation is seen as having a decidedly racial edge to it.

The Martins want “Stand Your Ground” repealed in spite of the fact that this law did not even enter into the picture that evening at all. Again, truth doesn’t matter. “This is not a Democrat or Republican issue, it’s not ‘black’ or ‘white’ issue, it’s a wrong and right issue” say the Martins.

I cannot imagine that the Martins believe what they wrote above that this is not a political issue or a race-based issue. Everything their lawyers have said and everything Sharpton has said and even some of the things implied by the parents themselves proves that they all believe it’s racial. Other blacks who have been busy attacking innocent whites also understand this to be about race. The media made it about race from day one.

The mural created by Huong won’t help the situation. It will simply create more racial antagonisms and it’s all based on what people want to believe is at the very core of the event: racism. Such is the result of politically correct thinking.
