Aaron Sorkin’s Leftist Bias is Clearly Seen in Every Episode of “The Newsroom”

The Newsroom

Leftist Utopia of “The Newsroom”

Recently, Janna Brock wrote an article on a particular episode (#5 of Season 2) of Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom” (HBO). I thought her take on it was not only well-written, but enlightening. I had just begun watching the show and was only up to episode 6 of Season One.

Janna highlighted the fact that “The Newsroom” – about a fake news agency called Atlantis Cable News (ACN) – took the time to go after a real news bureau on the ‘Net called “Word Net Daily” (WND.com). They even showed the company’s Internet page including their logo.

Only a short while ago, I had not even heard of “The Newsroom.” I was flipping through Amazon Prime via Roku and saw a short blurb for the show starring Jeff Daniels. Daniels is an actor I enjoy and after reading the info about the show, I thought I’d give it a try. The show “features an ensemble cast including Jeff Daniels as anchor Will McAvoy, who, together with his staff set out to put on a news show “in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements”

What originally drew me to the show, aside from Daniels, was the fact that Sorkin was connected to it. He is an excellent writer and dialogue often comes fast. People talk over one another (just like they do in real life) and the interaction is normally meaningful. Beyond this, the main premise of the show was a newscaster (Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy), who had a bit of a break down and came out on the other side desperately wanting to provide news in an unbiased way. Great! I thought I’d give it a shot.

What I have learned after watching six episodes is that Sorkin and I have a serious difference of opinion regarding what constitutes “unbiased.” I was expecting to watch a program that was centered, but went back and forth between left and right occasionally in order to find that true balance. What I learned though is that “The Newsroom” progressively became more leftist with each episode. It was very disheartening and in the end, what we have in “The Newsroom” is no different from what we have on CNN or any of these other news bureaus where only the left has their say and that’s about it.

Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is said to be a Republican on the show. Unfortunately, he’s much more like a RINO than a true Republican and moving steadily toward the left. The show portrays McAvoy as someone who is finding his way and while there’s nothing wrong with that, for McAvoy, finding his way means coming to the conclusion that he’s really a leftist. Even though he will come out against illegal immigration, by the end of that episode, he has “seen the light” in realizing just how hard it is for illegals to make it in America. In one instance, a lifelong illegal was discovered and his car was taken from him by the authorities. Without a car, he can’t get to work. Without work, he will starve, etc. Though McAvoy complained originally that he was taking an American’s job, by the end of the episode, he volunteered to pay for the man’s cab fair to and from work every day.

The same thing happened during an episode when ACN highlighted Sarah Palin. McAvoy bravely attempted to defend Palin’s comments, but you could easily tell that he was embarrassed at having to do so. This is really the running “gag” throughout the show, from episode to episode. It is a portrayal of a man who starts out claiming to be part of the GOP (but what does that mean today?), but slowly appears to be much more in line with the Democrats. One can only assume that by following the through line and direction of this particular undercurrent, Will McAvoy will likely be a full blown break out Democrat in the not too distant future of the show.

What is probably most troubling about the show (besides all of the swearing that goes on!) is the way the characters are so unequivocally leftist. Aside from McAvoy, there is no one on the show who even remotely attempts to see things from the right.

What Sorkin has created is as Janna Brock said – “a leftist utopia. A world where crazy right wingers are the real enemy, not Islam, or the Obama Administration.” In that sense, there is nothing remarkable about Sorkin’s latest show because it pretty much defines just about every newsroom in America. There is a built-in bias with the news that has existed for decades, even going back to people like Edward R. Murrow, Cronkite, and others. Then of course, it wasn’t so obvious. Today, we have news “reporters” providing us with their opinions all the time instead of simply providing news. They not only decide what the news is, but what our opinion about it should be. Sorkin is trying to make it appear as though this is not the case.

In the “The Newsroom,” it is not accidental that everyone essentially believes the same leftist ideology. It’s a form of brainwashing that Sorkin is providing to cause us to believe that those on the right are really part of the lunatic fringe. If everyone consistently comes down on the “correct” side of every issue all the time, what is that supposed to tell us? The left’s viewpoint is the natural conclusion to every issue, therefore, the correct one. That makes everyone on the right, wrong.

Though “The Newsroom” is well-written, with great acting, and moves along at a quick pace, it is becoming increasingly difficult to watch because of the leftist jargon under-girding each episode. With Janna’s explanation of Season 2, Episode 5, the decision to no longer watch the show is an easy one to make.
