Miley Cyrus VMA Performance And The Anatomy Of A Train Wreck
Watching a train wreck is painful and unavoidable. The Miley Cyrus VMA performance Sunday night was a precursor to a wreck that is surely to happen. And it’s hard to see it as anything but sad.
Celebrity gossip is never worth the page it is printed on, especially in the tense times in which we live. But last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus gave a performance that was so desperate and raunchy that it would even give Lady Gaga pause. What happened to the sweet Disney girl who professed to be a Christian? And is she the next young celebrity to have a nervous breakdown, or worse yet, commit suicide?
Without question, the Miley Cyrus VMA performance Sunday night set new standards for desperation. If attention is all she wants, she is going to get it. And for all the wrong reasons. But sadly, in the world of celebrity, desperately seeking attention in the form of debauchery is the only way to go about it.
She won the whore-off with Lady Gaga, and that is saying something. This is not meant to be mean, but to show how far a cute girl from a Christian family has gone off the deep end. This is sad, and she needs help.
Miley Cyrus is not Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is the queen of all that is cheap and tacky in entertainment, a side-show of the grotesque. But even Cyrus out did her last night with a disgusting display of raunchy antics. The VMA’s are notoriously over the top. The “award show” is nothing but a time for pop stars to stretch their exhibitionist muscles.
Last night, Cyrus performed her song “We Can’t Stop,” which had already raised eyebrows when the video was released for its shocking sexuality, and “twerking.” She had dancing teddy bears as props, which was disturbing enough. But then she joined Robin Thicke onstage for his performance of “Blurred Lines,” one of the biggest hits of the summer. What happened during this number was shocking.
Cyrus stripped down to a flesh-colored bikini, and then used a fan’s foam finger to stroke her privates, bumping and grinding along with Thicke. The display shocked an audience that would be impossible to shock. Twitter went crazy, as the performance drew 300,000 tweets per minute. Last year, the tweet count peaked at 98,000 tweets per minute.
The picture of Will Smith and his family’s reaction is worth a thousand words. The shock on their faces says more than any caption could add to the moment. This is an audience who has seen Britney Spears and Madonna kiss and Lady Gaga faking a hanging, while drenched in fake blood. It’s no coincidence that Lady Gaga and Madonna have so many nods for shocking VMA moments. They are “shock” queens of pop.
It is shameful it has come to this for Miley Cyrus. No matter what she does next, she’ll never be able to live this down. And if she continues to try to top herself, she’ll hit a brick wall. With so many recent suicides of young people, and the public breakdowns of Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes, it’s hard not to see this as Cyrus’s call for help.
What’s happening to her? It’s impossible to know, or if she is just trying to out do the raunchiest celebrities for her place in infamy. But whatever is happening, this girl needs prayer. She’s playing with a fire that cannot be put out. And her life from this point on is at stake. Once you take a turn down this road, you cannot go back. This is the anatomy of a train wreck.
Here are some noted Twitter reactions.
If any horror movie script writers are struggling for ideas, just get Miley Cyrus in your movie, doesn't matter what it's about.

Good point. It’s sad but true.
What do Alderaan and Miley Cyrus's dignity have in common? They both no longer exist

Watching VMAs. Haven't been in a strip club in a while, but good to see nothing has changed

Even worse, Bill Maher has a point. This is how bad it was.
